When’s the best time to fly to the Dominican Republic?
You really can’t go wrong choosing to visit the Dominican Republic at any time of year! On our paradise island, summer never gets brutally hot year-round — even in the peak of summer, temperatures rarely climb past 30°C, with an average annual temperature of 28°C. Water temperature stays at 28–30°C all year long.
Our small island packs in several distinct ecosystems: monsoon and evergreen tropical forest (the Samana Peninsula), semi-desert (Baní province), tropical savanna (Punta Cana), mixed forest (Jarabacoa, Constanza), humid tropical forest (Barahona, Puerto Plata), and dry tropical forest (Sabaneta and Dajabón). Coastal areas run hotter than the mountains, and cities run hotter than the countryside. There’s no sharply defined rainy season in the Dominican Republic, though rainfall peaks in November in the Samana Peninsula and Barahona areas.
Hotels in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic impresses not just with its varied landscapes and mild climate, but with the sheer range of its hotels too: you’ll find everything from small, family-run 10–20 room hotels to true giants with 5,000–6,000 rooms. Naturally, every hotel has its own crowd, along with its own pros and cons. What they all have in common: everywhere you go, you’ll be welcomed like an old friend. Dominicans are known for their warmth and hospitality, and you’ll constantly feel like you’ve stepped into a musical — locals are always singing, dancing, and enjoying life.
Large chain hotels typically offer a wide selection of bars and à la carte restaurants, entertainment programs, beach activities, casinos, and clubs. Many of these hotels are practically the size of small towns, complete with their own shops, clinics, and even small chapels. Hotels also break down into family-friendly (with developed infrastructure for kids — kids’ clubs, water parks), adults-only, and youth-oriented options.
Even though many travel agencies warn guests against leaving the hotel grounds, we strongly recommend booking at least 2–3 excursions, to get a real sense of everyday Dominican life outside the resort. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by locals’ endless cheerfulness, even though the country overall isn’t wealthy and everyday priorities here differ somewhat from what’s common in developed European, Western, or Asian countries.
Beaches of the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic covers just over 48,000 square kilometers, yet boasts more than 1,600 kilometers of sandy coastline. Not every Dominican beach has white sand — you can also visit beaches with yellow (Playa Sosúa), pink (Playa La Entrada), red (Playa del Morro), and even black sand (Playa Monte Río). Pebble-beach fans should check out Playa Caracoles. Most beaches remain uncrowded to this day, with no infrastructure at all, though more than 200 beaches offer parking, fresh water, and small cafés and restaurants.
The local people
Perhaps one of the biggest perks of a Dominican vacation is the local population. They bring a positivity, cheerfulness, and childlike spontaneity all their own. They have no qualms about approaching you, striking up a conversation, or dancing — it’s simply in their blood. Dominicans haven’t yet been jaded by tourism; they’re genuinely warm, friendly, and always eager to help in any situation. Yes, they can sometimes be slow-moving or forgetful, but that’s a typical trait of southern cultures everywhere, so be ready for it. Petty theft is fairly common in the country, but even when Dominicans do steal something, they’ll never take your very last item. We recommend tipping housekeeping $1–2 or leaving a chocolate bar, and avoiding carrying too much cash — every reputable establishment and business accepts card payments. We’d also recommend leaving jewelry at home.

Being close to the sea also helps treat and prevent a range of skin and lung conditions. Unfortunately, not every hotel offers a wide selection of fruit, so be sure to visit a local fruit stand! We especially recommend trying Dominican mango, pineapple, avocado, sapote, soursop, star fruit, noni, limoncillo, and, of course, papaya.

Beyond bright memories, we recommend stocking up on classic Dominican souvenirs. Dominican coffee, cacao, chocolate, and rum are some of the best in the world, backed up by countless awards and rankings. There’s an enormous variety of types and blends, so be sure to try as many as you can to find the ones you love most. That said, be careful with popular cigar and rum brands — local markets and shops often carry counterfeit goods of questionable quality, which can even be harmful to your health.
