Diving in the Dominican Republic means diving in both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean — and you can do it year-round. On the Atlantic coast, visibility is better in summer, while conditions in the south and east of the island are at their best in winter.
The country is known above all for its underwater caves, though these require a specialist qualification (the PADI Cavern Diver Specialty). Even so, beginners get their share of the spectacle: shipwrecks, coral reefs and rare marine life, including sea turtles, manatees, dolphins and even whales.
What does diving cost?
Both the price and the range of sites open to you depend on whether you hold a diving certificate. You can earn one right here: the basic course costs $225 and covers three pool sessions plus two open-water dives, after which you receive an internationally recognised certificate.
Without a certificate, the cheapest Atlantic dive starts at $88, while a Caribbean dive with an instructor runs from $220. You will also find pool try-dives advertised online for $30–50 — and many hotels run free try-dives on set days of the week.
Who should not dive
Of all the activities available in the Dominican Republic, diving carries the longest list of restrictions. Ideally, get a medical check-up before starting to learn, because the contraindications are numerous.
Do not dive immediately after a flight, or within 24 hours before one. Too little sleep or a heavy night of drinking beforehand can also lead to unpleasant consequences. Diving is strictly off-limits for anyone with respiratory problems, for pregnant women, and for anyone with a severe chronic condition.
